starkicker3 asked this question on 3/6/2000:
How do parents play a role in gun control?
jellygator gave this response on 3/14/2000:
Sure, parents can keep guns locked up and practice other safety measures, but in the end, the biggest influencing factor is how the parents handle the weapons. If the parents are too casual and take shortcuts when cleaning or handling it, the kids will not revere the gun as the deadly tool that it is. On the other hand, by setting a positive example (things like never pointing a gun at someone, even in jest, and not assuming it's empty) the child(ren) will learn how to handle it if they ever do have one in their hands.
jellygator gave this follow-up answer on 3/14/2000:
Parents should keep guns and ammunition locked up (separately), use safeties, and above all, demonstrate their own respect for the weapon's destructive potential.
