What is going on with same sex unions? Is the Chruch influences the law? Would appreciate your opinions.

Most assuredly the Christian churches in America have influenced laws, despite the fact that there is to be a separation of church and state. Laws on same-sex marriages, polygamy/polyandry, prostitution, etc. are all laws that are based on morality: and most of those are based on Judeo-Christian theology. All of them need to be challenged and overturned, but that's going to take some time and a lot of legal effort.
Vermont is on the verge of becoming the first state in the USA to allow same gender marriages, although they will be called "civil unions". The new law will give gays equal rights to heteroseuxals who marry and allow them to get the more than 1800 benefits that are offered to married couples by the federal government. It will also allow them to finally challenge, in court, the DOMA(Defense of Marriage Act) and to challenge other states' laws that refuse to recognize same gender marriages as guaranteed in, I believe, the fourteenth amendment.

I AM NOT SURE all LAWS NEED TO BE CHALLENGED AND OVERTURNED. But, this one does. Thank you.
