How do I tell if I am depressed. For the last few years I've just been feeling blue. Nothing seems to interest me anymore. I started feeling this way after losing a family member a few years ago and can't seem to shake it. I tried counseling but without much sucess. It is difficult for me to feel comfortable opening up to people. How do I overcome this problem.

It sounds as though you DO have a depression--it appears to be more than the 'blues'.
As for how to deal with it--keep trying different counselors. It has taken me YEARS (NO exaggeration) to find one with whom i "click" You may want to ask your Dr about an anti depressant. If you have been a longtime patient of his/hers and explain how you are feeling (s)he should prescribe one with no problem.
On the topic of antidepressants, it may take several tries (or more) to find the best drug and dose for you.
Keep trying. When you find someone you click with you will be able to open up.
Also, have you checked for bereavement support groups?
Good Luck!!
