drkathy,i think perhaps im a candidate for depression drugs to enhance the quality of life. however a psychiatrist couch is not something i want to persue, what kind of specialist or doctor should i look for to pursue this possibility, and the most painless. i dont have insurance that will cover this. thanks. chris

Dear Chris: If you think you are depressed, there are two things you can do. You can see a therapist or social worker and/ you can see a physician or psychiatrist for medication. If you do not have insurance, you can discuss the options with your regular doctor. There are usually mental health clinics in most areas that offer free or reduced fee services.
Keep in mind that a good professional evaluation can help you figure out what is really wrong and help you find a solution. Depression is generally not something that just goes away or cures itself. Something more is generally needed.
Sometimes therapy or medication can be used for a very short time for long term relief. Check it out. You'll be glad you did.
