Hi, What do you recommend for someone dealing with major depression - have recognized it for the past seven years, and taken medication. Med seems to not be working as well. I have a child and worry for my child also... You mention that different mental illnesses have run in your family and they have coped and had productive lives. Can you tell me what your family members tried? I am willing to go back into therapy, and see if the meds can be adjusted, but I am discouraged, and I am worried for my child. Any ideas, inspirations, suggestions you may have are appreciated. Thank you.

There are many positives in your letter. First you recognize that you have been dealing with depression for several years. Second, you realize that the meds may not be working as well now. Third, you are willing to attend therapy. Fourth, you are open-minded about an adjustment in medication. And last but not least, you have compassion for your child and concern for his/her welfare and future even during your state of discouragement. The very best move for you to make at this time is to see your therapist, explain exactly what is going on and why you feel the meds aren't working as well anymore. You may need a different one, or simply an increase in strength of your present one. You asked what my family members tried. What works well for one may not be the cure all for another. However, my Dad and I have done wonderfully with Paxil. I have recently been prescribed BuSpar for anxiety and it helps with PMS as well. Good luck and let me know if I can assist you further - anytime. Sincerely, trishowe
