i have a history of bulimia, ending 9 years ago. about a year ago, i was prescribed wellbutrin. i hadn't mentioned my past bulimia to the doctor. i went off the medication because of finances, but am now seriously thinking about going back on it. i will be seeing a new therapist. if i tell her about the bulimia, is there a chance that she won't want to prescribe the wellbutrin? why is it not recommended for patients with a history of bulimia?

For some unknown reason, people with a history of certain eating disorders (including bulimia) have a higher likelihood of suffering a seizure while taking Wellbutrin. I can understand your wanting to 'hide' the fact that you had an eating disorder so you can get a medication that you know works for you. However, as with any patient-physician interaction, it is in the patients' best interest to disclose *all* relevant information, even a Hx of bulimia that ended nine years ago. You will probably be cautioned about the possibility of a seizure if you intend to take Wellbutrin, and you will most likely be educated about alternate choices (e.g. Zoloft). Ultimately you are in charge of your own health. Your physician may get you to sign a document acknowledging the fact that you have been made aware of the possible danger and are willing to accept the increased risk of having a seizure while taking Wellbutrin. Other than that, if you want Wellbutrin you are entitled to it. Good luck in making your decision. Regards, NRO_Sx
