Anonymous asked this question on 4/13/2000:
I'm being treated for depression with celexa (citalopram). I have been taking augmentin for bronchitis and had also done some over-the-counter sudafed and Afrin for congestion. Also, I have been stealing my daughter's ritalin, grinding it up, and snorting it. Last week I had a few angry outbursts. Could the interaction of these drug have resulted in the anger or does celexa have those side effects alone? I'm on 20 mg.

Hi Anon,
I've been on more then a couple dep meds, but havent been on celexa. I only know that it is a anti-depression med. BUT here is a site that that tell alot about that particular med.

About sudafed, I know it contains Ephedrine. Which is a whole nother issue lol
-On to what I think is the serious issue... snorting your daughters ritalin. I did some research on this, and I'll let you know a few things. :)
Here are some (adverse also) side effects from ritalin:
----->*irritability*<-----
*loss of sleep
*stomach pains
*dizziness
*psychotic episodes
*severe depression upon withdrawal
*(rare but it can happen) facial ticks
The risks increase soooooooooooooo soooo soooo much *more* when it's being abused...
Quote:
"<The risk is even greater (dangerous) when> either those misusing their own prescription of Ritalin (usually by snorting it) or those who obtain the drug from others."

Since you're snorting you should know this:
"Ritalin contains ingredients which yield dilute hydrochloric acid when they come in contact with moisture -- such as that found in the nasal passages."
Which means that the acid will (and I'm not being grandiose) but it will "burn" the inside of your nose. Which results in: "open sores, nose bleeds, and the eventual deterioration of the nasal cartilage."
More Quotes:
"Taking large amounts <of ritalin> will cause a rapid heart beat and strong feelings of anxiety"
And according to a site for a school, (there was a special page telling parents that kids were doing ritalin and that) "...when snorted in this manner shuts off the supply of oxygen to the brain. This is extremely dangerous..."
Well, I know I didnt exactly answer your anger outbursts question, except I did show you that irritability is very much a side effect of ritilan (especially when abused.)
...Hey, I've also gotta tell you that you should always, always, always, contact your local pharmacy or psych/doc whichever you prefer, if you aren't sure what the effects will be when taking certain medication when already on other medication. I remember I was taking a certain med (I dont remember which med that was, sorry) and I was coughing non stop. I wanted to take a cough supressant, but opted not to. Then I found out, that the cough med I was about to take had a bad interaction w/ the med(s) I was already on. ...So, call your local pharmacy they'll have a list of drug interactions in their computer! (I know that my place does!)
Thanks Anon for "Asking Aja! I hope I helped you even in a tiny way. Good luck. stay well!!! ~aja

Grapemint: Thank you very much for your very caring message and advice and the information. A number of people really (claiming to be therapists) came down on me hard for the part about the ritalin. You showed a very mature lack of judging and a genuine concern for my situation. I'm not particularly proud of the ritalin. I was feeling drowzy and lethargic from the celexa and the ritalin gave me great clarity. I have stopped and don't intend to do it any more. I see my psychiatrist on Wednesday so I'll discuss this with him then. Thanks again.
