When you say the op failed to "disrupt ars, and that it only served to demonstrate that OSA had very few clues..." I think you have not taken into consideration other aspects of the sporgery.
As a result of the millions of sporgeries, some critics spent their time doing a number of things to track and document the sporgers and their activities. So, to the extent that some (including me) were off doing that, our time, money and energies were not able to be spent on things we would rather have been doing.
Additionally, Deja News was greatly impacted due to the tremendous amounts of time, personnel and money spent on canceling the sporgeries.
Also, the sporgery had the effect of making ars unreadable for newbies who did not know how to filter based upon NNTP-Posting-Host info.
The forging of authors' identities and email addresses caused a great inconvenience for everyone who *cares* about the data archived at the sites which perform such services.
Not only that, but it made it difficult and time-consuming to retrieve the valid articles posted, since one has to weed through massive amounts of sporgeries to find the legitimate post.
For an example of *one* of my sporged posts titled "Scientology's failed responsibility towards children" which I made on 17 March 1999, and which was sporged over 500 times, look here:
That's just _one_ of my posts which was sporged during over a year's worth of junk which was dumped into the newsgroup and subsequently archived at Deja/Google.
It wouldn't surprise me to see Scientology enter into evidence a forged post, if the cult thought they could get away with it, or if they could cause someone to be jacked around in terms of having to defend against a manufactured piece of evidence.
Many of the archived sporgeries are extremely racist and hateful. The content of these could have very chilling effects.
