Multiple personality disorder is a form of dissociation. It is a coping mechanism used by someone who has undergone severe trauma during childhood. The age at which the traumas occurred are dissociated from the rest of the personality. So, there may be as few as two personalities or there may be dozens....all split off and many out of consciousness. The transition from one personality to another may be sudden and dramatic. The person may have awareness of what is happening and they may not. There is often time loss. They may find items in their room that they have no idea how they got there. They may be told they have done things they have no memory of having done. They may find themselves somewhere with no idea how they got there.
