I was diagnosed with BPD in March of 1999. I have had mental/emotional problems my entire life but generally dropped out of therapy within the first six weeks(therapy started for me at age 10)for various reasons. When I stated going lat year again I was given medication for the first time ever, wow it had made an enormous diference. My question is my therapist does not think I have BPD she thinks I am quite simply an Adult Child of Alcoholic/Codependents that has had an exssevie amount of. When studding both issues I see they are very very similar in nature. Can anyone give me more info on the correlation between the two, is there any? Should I believe my Psychiatrist who had me fill out a bunch of tests and talked to me for an hour.

That is complex PTSD, and yes I would believe the doc, as BPD is a garbage bin dx that generally hurts the client more than it ever helps. I am glad you found someone who is willing to life that label from you. my guess is you have a lot of truama in your past and have a hard time with trusting people. You have probably been burned more than once by my mental health colleagues and, as such, a more than a bit appropriately suspicious of any new labels etc. The correlation is irrelevant because the BPD is so negative-look at the criteria for BPD and compare it to PTSD and see the connectives their-they are more accurate and probably more relevant to your life experiences. My guess is you have gottena hold of a pretty good therapist. tbp

Forgive my ignorance but what is PTSD?
tbp gave this response on 4/7/2000:
Sorry, I get so used to abbreviations... that is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, listed under anxiety disorders in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual IV as opposed to the personality disorder section. sorry about that...habit :} tbp
