Suzy asked this question on 4/7/2000:
I recently asked a question regarding something I had read in a magazine stating that some people diagnosed with allergies actually have a fungus in their nasal passages. I got an answer suggesting Melaleuca Oil. I would like to put this question out for more information so I can compare the answers.

Suzy,
Some of the airborne allergens you inhale may include different types of fungus. In fact, airborne fungi are commmon allergens. However, as long as you are essentially healthy, you shouldn't have to worry about fungus growing or living in your nose. (By 'essentially healthy'I mean your immune system hasn't been stressed by AIDS or chemotherapy or maybe by LONG term treatment with steriods or antibiotics.)
Melaleuca oil is a documented fungicidal (kills fungus). However, I've never seen or heard of melaleuca in a formulation appropriate for nasal use. I probably wouldn't use undiluted oil since the inside of the nose skin is tender & delicate. Besides burning when applied, it might also make your nasal tissue swell. (That would be like bad nasal allery!)
I found your question by chance-I usually hang out in teen & adolescent health, mental & emotional health & alternative medicine. Since your question has a lot to do with alternative medicine.
Hope this helps! Zoe
