Pat Robertson going to Hell?

by Charles Sumner

There has been some discussion here about whether fundies (short for fundamentalists) recognize other Christian groups as "true" Christians. The titular leader of many fundies (and head of the Christian Coalition) is Pat Robertson. It is rumored that some call him "the Poop," inasmuch as he would like to have as much authority as the head of the largest "Christian" denomination. His comments are often unworthy of publication, but they do sometimes shed light on such knotty questions.

In the July-August issue of "Church and State" magazine, published by Americans United for Separation of Church and State, are details about Robertson's comments on the June 5 "700 Club." He asserts that most mainline Protestants are going to hell. (I don't have a scanner, so I'll just provide a few significant portions of the item.)

Which denominations is he referring to? He specifically mentions Episcopal, Presbyterian, Lutheran, and Methodist - and adds "etc." He doesn't seem to consider that the concept of a "born again' experience in not necessarily a part of their theology. And of course, we all know the attitude of many fundamentalists toward other denominations and especially toward non-Christian religions.

Robertson also revealed why the Religious Reich wants to get into public schools. He said that more than three out of four people who accept Jesus Christ as their personal savior do so before the age of 18.

Right now Robertson and wealthy members of the Christian Coalition are on a cruise to Bermuda. From New York City the fares were $1099 to $1499 per person plus tax. Maybe he should have used some of his millions to take along a few of us who have only the future prospect of Hell to look forward to.
