BTW, I had lunch with my fundy friend last week, an event that is all too rare these busy days, being as he's supporting himself, a wife, and FOUR kids. He had asked me in a phone conversation if C. Sagan was a Christian. My response was fairly vehement, needless to say, and completely negatory.

I asked him what made him come to that conclusion, and he said it was from watching "Contact." That certainly peaked MY curiosity, so I rented the movie and watched it twice, end-on-end, trying to figure out why he had come to that conclusion from the plot.

When we had lunch together, he said he found the movie even more intriguing since finding out that Carl was an atheist, and now wants his wife, who is no sci-fi fan, to watch it.

Apparently it was because Carl had the arguments down so pat about there being things in this world that do not leave empirical evidence and all that. It flashed through my mind just how sheltered my fundy friend had been that he didn't realize that a world-renowned scientist and popularizer of science would be totally familiar with all the fundy arguments.

Sometimes I wonder just how sophisticated a criminal law practice actually makes one.
