Why Some Atheists Despise Some Christians

By Edward Cooper

Atheists have been accused by Christians of being "angry" and "insensitive" to views expressed by Christians in this newsgroup [alt.atheist] This "anger," of course, is understandable whenever the newly "saved" fundie arrives here expecting people to share in his new found joy. He was feted by the crowd when he raised his hand and strode to the front of the hall or church to acknowledge his debt to Christ; and he expects to be eulogized by the entire world for his decision. Unfortunately, he is met with disbelief and disdain, which he interprets to be anger. Atheist contempt for Christian beliefs goes beyond teaching reality to fundies--- in their view the whole Christian philosophy is fatally flawed.

There are five basic enduring reasons why some atheists despise some Christians:

  1. Most Christians are required by their faith to evangelize and proselytize. This neurotic necessity of imposing beliefs on others, despite shoddy credentials, is particularly annoying in fundamentalists.
  2. The identification of atheism with "evil." This perverse view is the result of the arrogation to themselves of the high moral ground. It is a further result of the "us or them" view that Christians have of the world. Unfortunately, the press has been supportive in sustaining this false notion.
  3. The confusion of dogma with education, especially in the public school setting.
  4. Beating a dead horse like creationism.
  5. The propagation of science illiteracy, particularly by televangelists supporting the view that science is inimical to religion.
Some of my best friends are Christians. Although they may implicitly believe in the above approaches to furthering their religion, they are not "in-your-face" about it. With that tacit agreement, we get along fine.
