An old roommate owes my money and I really need it. If I cast a spell to induce it to give it to me is that violating the principle of free will?

Yep My advice is don't do it at all, but make the person involved think you have (don't go out and tell him blatantly), drop the odd subtle hint about it. Psychology works better in these situations. Remember if you do a spell the Threefold rule applies and threrfore you may find that if you do a spell and they give you the money, then you will be in a worse situation than before.
So e Subtle, don't do a spell, as real power comes from belief, and if in the back of his mind they thinks you have done something then they might pay up. But be really Subtle ans this will effect his subconcious and that is the most power part of the human mind, and can also be the most persuasive.
