VintageMama asked this question on 3/8/2000:
I have been a practicing pagan for 5 years, but I have practiced alone, without coven. I am opening a shop, and I'll be carrying tarot cards, wiccan jewelery, and other items which will bring other witches into my shop. Here's my problem. I'm afraid I've been alone too long! I'm not sure I'll know how to protect myself from witches who intend harm, and invite friendships with white witches. This is a tough-y for me! I don't want to be so open, that I invite in the wrong kinds of energy, but I don't want to be so closed that I keep potential friends out!

Having been both a Solitaire and a Covener, I have found it has both ups and downs.
First off, know who and what you are. Be confident in and of yourself. Only you can know the specific path of Wicca that you are walking - no one else can walk it for you - no matter how much they try to direct it or tell you that you are walking the "wrong path".
Your own experiences are the best barometer that you can use. As a store owner, you will have experiences with those who are knowledgable and those who are new to Wicca and/or Witchcraft.
As with any other business, you need to be friendly to your customers and give good customer service. If friendships happen, great...wonderful. If they don't you have the strength not only of being who and what you are, but you have the option of banning those who do you harm from your store. In most states of America, a store owner has the right to refuse services to any given customer - and if that customer refuses to leave, you are fully within your rights to call the police and have them arrested for trespassing.
As for any sort of "metaphysical attack" while it is possible, it is very rare. Regular cleansings (such as once per month) and good shielding should take care of much if any problems.
The idea of an altar is good - tho perhaps I would not put it in a place where customers had a chance to touch it.
