Hi Oracle,
Just what is Wicca? Never heard, no clue about it. Would appreciate any introductory teaching and doctrines, and practices.
The_Oracle gave this response on 1/3/2000:
Wicca is a new name for several variations of a very old belief system, or religion, that being witchcraft. Wicca is a pagan religion, in that it is polytheistic in its beliefs. I.e. it recognizes two powers, the God and Goddess. Even though these two powers are said to spring forth from the same initial greater power. So basically, this one greater power has two aspects, one male and one female. Similar to the eastern belief of Yin and Yang, two opposing forces that work together to both compliment and check one another simultaneously.
Wicca is very open and accepting in its practices, and recognizes many different regional variations in its beliefs. There have been several good answers in the "Questions Answered" area of the Religion/Wicca expert area on this site. Just click on the "View more answers in Wicca" on the main Wicca screen and the look at the Wicca studies answers. I have written there as well as several others who have given excellent descriptions of Wicca.
As far as introductory materials go, there are a wide variety of books available through your local bookstore. I find it is best to research each book thoroughly before I purchase it, many are filled with nonsensical garbage and are better suited for humorous reading than religious pursuit. The best way to learn about Wicca is from one who practices Wicca it is not something you can really read about and adequately experience. It is like reading a book about swimming and then jumping into the ocean and trying it out. So try to find someone who lives the Wiccan way and visit with him or her in person. In my opinion, learning first hand is the best way to learn about Wicca.
