Fifty years before I was born, Darwin's solution to how life evolved and evolves had been accepted by the scientific community throughout the world as valid. The question of IF evolution occurs and occured had been answered; the question of HOW evolution occurs and occured had been to a very large part answered (with various mechanisms still not understood, as DNA had not been discovered yet).
Fifteen years before I was born, the fundamental mechanisms involved in evolution had been discovered: DNA, RNA, etc.
Now here I am, over forty years old, and I find myself dismayed and astonished at the fact that:
When I was passing through public high school (late +1,970s GC), evolutionary theory was not taught in science class. The word "evolution" was avoided when discussing similar traits between species. In Indian Springs (Nevada) High School my biology teacher (LDS Bishop Bud Hopkins) showed his class films produced by Creationists which made occult claims about how life on Earth was "designed" by a god. This was not just against the law--- it was also an abomination inflicted upon ignorant, defenseless children. Having such occult beliefs inculcated upon them must have resulted in lasting, life-long injury to their critical thinking abilities: it was functionally no different than performing brain surgery on children to remove bits of their higher reasoning facilities. [Almost certainly, our parents had no idea Bishop Hopkins was perpetrating this crime against us.]
American citizens cannot compete in the international economy when they are prevented from learning such basic facts such as evolutionary theory. The lack of education about evolution among USA citizens is as fundamentally injurious to the United States's well-being as the lack of education concerning heliocentrism; thermodynamics; aerodynamics; the germ theory of disease; atomic theory; chemistry. Economic competition is fundamentally healthy in a Capitalist country: when its citizens are ignorant regarding such basic facts as evolution, astronomy, physics, geology (etc.), it is ripe for economic stagnation, and the citizen's standard of living must decrease.
There is also a personal cost in not teaching sciences in general, and evolutionary theory in particular. One who is ignorant about the magnificence and wonder of biological evolution suffers from a lack she or he doesn't (and cannot) comprehend. Life is glorious and amazing, and that sense of the numinous is vastly greater when one understand how life came to exist.
Creationists must cease inflicting their occultism upon public school students. Since these cultists refuse to cease their predations, they must be forced to cease. Education and tireless political activism is required to make Creationists behave like honest, decent human beings. When they break the law (such as inflicting occultism in public schools), they must be PUT IN PRISION AND FINED. It is not good enough to sue them until they stop their criminal abuse. The United States Constitution mandates neutrality regarding occultism in government run institutions such as public schools: teaching Creationism IS AGAINST THE LAW and should be treated as such.
