How do I tell if I am depressed. For the last few years I've just been feeling blue. Nothing seems to interest me anymore. I started feeling this way after losing a family member a few years ago and can't seem to shake it. I tried counseling but without much sucess. It is difficult for me to feel comfortable opening up to people. How do I overcome this problem.

First of all let me say that people grieve differantly. Death, is a hard thing to handle. I'm going to list some symtoms of depression, and if any 3 of these fit you, then I would highly recomend that you get a Doctor, and be put on a antidepressant. I have to take antidepressants daily, and they really help alot. It took me going to 4 councelor's before I found the one I was comfortable with. Here are the symtomes
1) Loss or gain of your appitite
2) You stay secluded all the time
3) you feel useless, and hopeless
4) You feel worthless
5) You feel that no one love you
6) you feel like a loser
7) you have a increase, or decrease in sleep
8) you just don't want to be bothered by friends, or family.
9) you have thoughts of suicide
10) you don't have any desire to do anything. You don't want to do the things that use to be important to you.(such as Hobbies)
If 3 of these fit in your life, you may be depressed. (which I know you are) You need to go, and make an appointment with a Doctor, so that he can prescribe you an antidepressant. You wouldn't believe what a diffreance they make, trust me, I know because I take them. If you ever feel suicidal, go to the E.R ASAP. There isn't anything to be embarresed about at all. There are several million people that suffer from depression. There are also groups that help you deal with a loss of a loved one, and it's called Dealing with death, or dieing. This is a support group that helps you deal with your loss. I don't know if it's called that in the state your in, but you can call your local hospital, to find out. These groups usualy meet 2 times a week. I think that this too would be a great idea for you to try. The best thing right now, is for you to go to The Doctor, and see if he thinks you need to be on meds. If you have suffered with depression for the last few years, then yes by all means go, and get you some help. Please keep me posted. I hope that I have helped you, and remember If you need to talk you can email me at jricha@bellsouth.net
