Can Men Get Depressed?
Deedy13 gave this response on 5/12/2000:
Of course they can! As a matter of fact -- being a person who does spiritual counseling -- I've learned, that altough men are not as apt to suffer with depression as much as women do -- the men that do suffer with this dreaded curse, suffer longer and harder with it. I also find that men tend to cover it up better. This may be why they suffer more?
Women, as a rule, tend to be open about it, and reveal their depressions with friends and family. This open forum gives them support and release. But men hide their feelings of anxiety. So, of course, the problem has more time to manifest itself into extreem problems. By the time anyone is aware that there is a problem -- it's usually critical. Don't fool yourself -- men who suffer with depression are more suicidal than women. Unfortunately -- the nature of the beast -- prevents them from acknowledging thier depression because they feel it's inappropriate as a man to be emotionally weak.
